OK, It's a corny line but about six months ago I was asked
by Susan
Street Gallery to take some photographs of North County
for a client of theirs, Security
Business Bank.
Last week I managed to go to the bank to look around and
take some snapshots.

Black and White Photography is an excellent magazine from
the U.K.
I first heard that I was in this months issue when I got
an e-mail from Italy from fellow photographer Tiberio Fanti
(www.tiberiofanti.it).
So of course I went to the nearest bookstore to see for myself.
I'd been reviewed in this magazine once before but this time
I was spread across half a page under the banner "Web
Site of the Month".

I recently joined The PhotoArts
Group.
The Groups goals include seeking out new and interesting venues
to display their work on a grassroots basis by showing the
group’s portfolio to the owners of various coffee houses,
galleries, libraries, theaters, etc. Since its inception,
the PhotoArts Group has obtained numerous venues for it's
shows.
The photographers in the group are both established professionals
and emerging artists. The work covers a wide variety of styles
and media ranging from traditional silver-gelatin to old and
new alternative processes and digital images.
The first show that I'm contributing
to is:

I was in New Orleans a few years ago. It is a remarkable
place and I am saddened by the disaster that has recently
happened. Wanting to do something I decided to give the profits
from one photograph of a New Orleans Cemetery (see left) to
Second Harvest (www.secondharvest.com).
Basically I want to offer the print for $35. The only money
I will be taking out will be for postage and packing (that
should only be about $2). For international orders I will
need to add $5 for P&P ($40 total)
The print is exactly the same as the framed prints I sell.
It is printed on 11x8.5 inch paper with an image size of 9.5
inches along the longest edge. It is also coated with a UV
protection. I'm offering this print un-matted and unframed
to save on cost of postage and to keep the cost down.
One concern I have is proving to people that the money will
actually go to Second Harvest. I'm not sure quite how to do
that. I spoke to Laura Traut at Second Harvest and she agreed
that the best way was to post the names of the people or company
donating (with a link to their site if they wish) CHECK
THE LIST HERE. Whatever I do not spend on postage will
of course be added to the fund.
If you would like to purchase a print you can contact me
via e-mail at paul@sewellstudio.com.
If you don't want a print but would like to make a donation
to Second Harvest you can visit: www.secondharvest.com
I got a call asking to donate a copy of the photo to a silent
auction being held at Jacques Imo Restaurant in New York.
If you're in the area in September 14th please stop by and
show your support. Goto their web site at: www.jacquesimosnyc.com
for more details.
UPDATE: The
donated print raised over $200 at the silent auction. The
auction itself raised over $91,000 for the Red Cross New Orleans
relief effort.

Firstly, let me thank everyone
at the North County Photographic Society for inviting me
to speak at their monthly meeting. It was a lot of fun and
it was great to meet other people who share the same "habit"
as me.
I had a lot of people ask me about the software and music
I used for the presentation. Click
here for some answers.

On the 26th October I will be giving a talk on Street and
Architectural photography at the North County Photographic
Society.
The talk will include some history and techniques of street
photography and will also include some of my favorite photographers
both past and present. There will also be a slide show of
my own work, both street and architectural.
Visit their web site for further information: www.nc-photo.org
Location: Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas (exit
Interstate 5 at Encinitas Blvd and proceed east 0.5 miles

OK, not the real one. A photo I took in Paris of the Eiffel
Tower sold at a charity auction for $200 this month to raise
money for local children. The auction was organized and run
by the Rotary Club. |
|
May is a very special month for me, I have my first solo
show. "Traveling Light" will include a selection
of street and travel photography.
You are invited to the opening reception on Saturday, 14th
May between 3:00 and 5:00 pm. The reception coincides with
the Escondido “2nd Saturday Art Walk”. Hope to
see you there!
There was a great
turnout on the 14th May. I’d also like to thank Donna
Cosentino (the Gallery Director) for hosting the reception
and for doing such a great job in hanging all 34 photos in
the show.
I always say that
the most important thing about looking at a photograph is
the stories that you can tell about it, not the story the
photographer imagined. One couple I talked to told me of how
a photograph I took in Manayunk, PA made them feel home-sick
for Philly. I shared stories of walking through Paris with
a woman who was born and raised there. Talking to these people
made me notice things about some of my photographs that I
had never seen before.

For the third month running my
photographs will be in f-stop magazine. The theme this month
was open so I decided to submit a selection of some of my
favorites.
|
|

For the second month in a row my photographs appear in the
online magazine f-stop. The theme this month was "Consumption".
The three images that were picked were a still life of a salt
and pepper shaker, an empty manayunk restaurant and a New
Orleans restaurant window. |
|
It all started with an e-mail. “Do
you have any images on North County? We have a client who
wants some art for the walls of their new bank.” The
e-mail was from Susan
Street Gallery in Solana Beach, the Client, Security Business
Bank. They needed 5 photos for a new branch they were opening
in Del Mar.
The photos they we’re looking for were very corporate.
Not my usual style. A couple of locations were decided upon
and for the next few weekends I was up in North County clicking
away. One location was Solana Beach Station. A very interesting
but not very colorful building. I decided that the best time
to photograph this was at sunrise. That way there would be
the vivid blue of the sky contrasting the building lit by
the warm internal lighting and street lamps.
Also on the list was the Del Mar Racetrack. The architecture
there is wonderful. I spent most of my time photographing
the fountains.
The final locations were two corporate business parks. Walking
into the first one I wondered how I was possibly going to
make these rectangular boxes of glass and steel look interesting.
After half an hour a name came to mind . . . . . The Dutch
painter “Piet Mondrian”. Part of the Neo-Plasticism
movement.
Neo-Plasticism is a Dutch movement founded (and named) by
Mondrian. It is a rigid form of Abstraction, whose rules allow
only for a canvas subsected into rectangles by vertical and
horizontal lines, colored using a very limited palette. This
style seemed perfect so I set to work.

Four of my images of the West
Chester Farmhouse have been selected for an online group
exhibit for this months f-stop magazine. I sent them some
images a few months back and looking at some of the other
photographers in the show I am honored to have been chosen.
